In general composting, gypsum provides a source of sulphur that can easily be assimilated by growing plants.

One particular area of application is the production of compost for mushroom growing. The flocculating action of the calcium sulphate helps the compost to maintain an open structure, preventing it from turning sour. It also provides a buffering effect that assists the compost in staying within a pH range of around six to eight. This ensures that chemically combined nitrogen levels are maintained.

Preparation of Mushroom Compost

In the first phase of composting, the straw and manure is wetted to about 75% moisture and built into long stacks of 2 x 4 meters. Approximately one bag of gypsum is used every meter, which is mixed in the stacks. Air must be allowed to penetrate the stack so that the microbes can remain active. After about two weeks the second phase can start which involves transferring the compost to large trays, in well ventilated rooms. The aim is to complete composting under controlled conditions and to pasteurise it. The compost is ready when it has lost all smell of ammonia and will no longer heat up of its own accord.
