BIODIVERSITY
At Formula, we care deeply about biodiversity. We have taken actions to protect and restore rare species and natural habitats, showing our commitment to the environment and sustainability. Discover some of the incredible wildlife that call our quarries home. Thanks to our dedicated habitat management that ensures they are protected and thriving. All of the photos have been taken by our ecologists Rachel and Annika.
The Grizzled Skipper butterfly
This locally rare species, classified as “High Priority Regional Important” in Nottinghamshire, has been sighted at our quarry and factory sites in Newark. Known for its distinctive checkered black and white wings, this butterfly has found a welcoming habitat through our efforts to enhance the local environment with rocks and native flora.
Our initiatives support the Nottinghamshire Biodiversity Action Group’s Species Action Plan : we aim to strengthen existing wildlife populations and encourage new colonies.
Grass Snakes
Protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, Grass Snakes have been sighted at our Bantycock quarry during a reptile survey. Distinguished by their greenish colour and their unique yellow and black collar, they have found a safe haven in our special reptile hibernaculum. This initiative aims to boost their numbers by providing a safe and suitable habitat for hibernation and breeding. Our efforts align with regional conservation goals to support and protect this important species.
The Yellow-bellied Toad
The Yellow-bellied Toad has suffered a sharp decline in numbers, even becoming extinct in the area around Walkenried. Successful reintroduction has taken place in our quarries as part of a NABU project to breed and reintroduce endangered amphibian species. This particular toad has a distinctive pattern, with a yellow underside patterned with dark spots. They are particularly benefiting from the shallow ponds we’ve established. These ponds provide an ideal habitat for the toads to thrive and reproduce. For more information please visit the Life Bovar project’s website.
Yellow Swallowtail caterpillars
These striking caterpillars, recognized for their vibrant green body adorned with black stripes and orange spots, have been spotted at our quarry in Walkenried. They thrive in the carefully managed habitats we have created around the quarry. Their preferred host plants are wild carrot and fennel. Our efforts to cultivate these native plants has provided an ideal setting for the caterpillars to grow and eventually transform into beautiful butterflies during the summer months.
